This was our experience with Atherton Park Post Acute, and I sincerely wish my 94-year-old aunt had been sent anywhere else.

After a fall, she was discharged from Stanford Hospital to Atherton Park for rehabilitation. She entered as an ambulatory woman who used a walker, could manage her daily needs, and even walked up and down 14 stairs to her bedroom every day. Six weeks later, she left bedridden.

During her stay, she lost 10 pounds in six weeks. She sustained a sprained wrist due to a staff member’s handling — resulting in visible swelling — and despite multiple family members reporting it, we never received a clear explanation. Her mobility significantly declined rather than improved in what is supposed to be a rehabilitation facility. She now requires 24-hour caregiving, two-person transfers to a wheelchair, and toileting via bedside commode. Frankly, her mobility likely would have been better preserved had she been discharged home instead of sent here.

While the front desk staff were consistently kind and several CNAs showed genuine care and effort, others were abrasive — both verbally and physically. The inconsistency in care was alarming.

Communication with this facility was beyond frustrating. The social worker is in the office only three days a week and rarely returns voicemails. During my aunt’s six-week stay, I left repeated messages expressing serious concerns and received callbacks only when the topic involved her discharge date — specifically when her Medicare coverage was ending.

Their discharge equipment policy is equally troubling. Because her mobility declined during rehab, she required a hospital bed, wheelchair, and commode upon discharge. Yet we were told equipment cannot be ordered until three days before discharge. When I called repeatedly to ensure the bed would arrive in time — since sending a bedridden 94-year-old home without a bed is a clear safety risk — I was told delivery typically takes 7–10 days. The lack of coordination was staggering.

The stress this caused my aunt and our family was immeasurable.

Since bringing her home with 24/7 caregivers, several CNAs have independently shared that other clients have had similarly negative experiences at this facility.

If you value your loved one’s safety, dignity, and recovery, I strongly urge you to explore other options.

What i like about Atherton park is that everyone that I have come in contact with has been very professional and very friendly and very competent. I also notice that the facility is very clean and in general I would consider Atherton park post acute to be without any question the best nursing facility to be at for a number of reasons.

About this data
How to read this page
Star ratings vs. Care Quality Score: The Google star rating reflects visitor and family opinions collected from public reviews. The Care Quality Score is an independent metric derived entirely from federal inspection data — the two measure different things, and comparing them side-by-side gives a fuller picture.
Where this data comes from
All clinical data on this page originates from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency that certifies and inspects every Medicare- and Medicaid-participating nursing home in the United States. Reviews are imported verbatim from public Google business listings.
